Volkswagen has officially taken the wraps off the Golf R — a successor to the R32 variant of the previous-generation Golf. Now powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder, the Golf R promises to build on the performance of the R32.
The R32’s 3.2-liter V6 has been replaced with a lighter 2.0-liter turbocharged unit delivering 270 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Sending power to all four wheels, the Golf R accelerates from 0-60 in 5.7 seconds when equipped with a manual transmission, with Volkswagen’s optional DSG gearbox dropping that time to 5.5 seconds.
Inside and out the Golf R has plenty of unique features including LED daytime running lights, new five-spoke wheels, a new grille, R side skirts and badging and dual exhaust pipes.
Despite that power, the Golf R will still return a respectable 27.6mpg in the European cycle.
